This alga brown ( Durvillaea antarctica ) grows on the coasts and cold wave struck the South Pacific. It reaches a maximum length of 10 meters and it is collected, processed and sold for use in various fields such as food, cosmetics and medicine. The blades of this alga has been dug and are dried in this process the color changes from brown seaweed - green to yellow - brown. In Chile, this alga is considered to be the food of the poor and is widely used in the kitchen where it is routinely used as an accompaniment to other dishes. In this alga are attributed medicinal properties against kidney stones and intestinal disorders, also has lots of important elements in the body such as iodine, magnesium and calcium. It can also be used as a dietary supplement as low in fat. Being rich in alginic acid is used as an effective cleansing because this substance in the gut absorbs toxic elements preventing the absorption and therefore the effect of the occurrence of the toxic effect. The seaweed has been subjected to various tests and has no toxicity to the human organism.
